Does Mouthwash Whiten Teeth?

Everyone wants a perfect smile. Getting super white teeth (and keeping them that way) is easier said than done, though. You’ve probably tried different toothpastes, but does mouthwash whiten teeth? If so, does whitening mouthwash work as well as other products?

Some formulas can slowly but surely erase surface stains with consistent use. But, the results will be fairly subtle compared to strips, trays, or professional treatments. Think of a whitening mouthwash as a maintenance step rather than a corrective tool.

That’s not a bad thing, though. Mouthwash still has its place in your oral care routine. LIVFRESH plaque removal mouthwash, for example, uses Activated Edathamil to dissolve plaque on a molecular level and prevent it from coming back. We have some wonderful whitening products that go hand-in-hand with the mouthwash (and toothpaste).

You can still strive for brilliantly white teeth, but clean teeth and healthy gums come first.

Key Takeaways

  • The whitening results from mouthwash are subtle at best.
  • Stick with specialized whitening products like strips, trays, or professional whitening. Let mouthwash do what it’s meant to do (clean teeth and support gum health).
  • Hydrogen peroxide is the most effective whitening agent used in mouthwash.
  • Expect at least 2-4 weeks of consistent use before you see any improvements in the shade of your teeth.
  • LIVFRESH’s whitening strips give you teeth 8 shades whiter in as little as 14 days without any sensitivity, powered by coconut oil.

Does Mouthwash Whiten Teeth?

Mouthwash has mostly been known for freshening breath, or in the case of LIVFRESH, removing plaque and improving gum health. But does mouthwash whiten teeth as well? Some might, but not all formulas are made for the same purpose.

First, know that mouthwashes of all sorts are made to remove plaque that your toothbrush bristles and floss couldn’t reach. This sticky biofilm can be part of what makes your teeth look yellow in the first place.

So, there’s some case to be made for whitening properties right there. Let’s take a closer look at how specially-formulated whitening mouthwashes work below.

How Does Mouthwash Whiten Teeth?

Whitening mouthwashes work through one of two mechanisms.

Some use hydrogen peroxide - the same bleaching agent you’ll find in professional whitening solutions. Just at a lower concentration. Mouthwash might use 1.5-2% hydrogen peroxide, whereas strips have 5-10% and professional treatments come in around 10-40%.

Other formulas use ingredients like sodium hexametaphosphate to coat enamel and block new discoloration before it has a chance to form. They may not get your teeth whiter but they help keep them looking pretty once you get them white!

There are also products that combine the two ingredients for corrective and protective properties in one rinse. We’ll talk more about what to look for in a whitening mouthwash below. First, we want to set expectations.

Does Whitening Mouthwash Work as Well as Other Whitening Products?

No - and it’s not particularly close. Whitening mouthwash does the least amount of bleaching of any “tooth whitening product” on the market.

It makes sense when you think about it. You’re only getting contact with your teeth for 30-60 seconds with a rinse. On the other hand, professional trays stay on for hours. Even at-home whitening strips like ours are supposed to lock onto your teeth for 20-30 minutes.

So, don’t expect any sort of miraculous results from a “whitening mouthwash.” These have their place in prevention, but that’s really it.

How Soon Will You See Results?

You will need to commit to a month of rinsing to see any sort of results from a whitening mouthwash. Even then, though, the transformation (if you can even call it that) will be very subtle. These products are better suited for holding your teeth at a certain shade that you’ve already reached from some other type of whitening product.

What Should I Look For in a Whitening Mouthwash?

So, does mouthwash whiten teeth? Only if it contains the right type of ingredients - this is what you need to look at when shopping for a whitening mouthwash:

  • Hydrogen peroxide (1.5-2%): This is the only ingredient proven to bleach surface stains. Any product that calls itself a whitening mouthwash but doesn’t have this ingredient is probably just preventing stains, not removing them.
  • Alcohol content matters: Not because more alcohol helps remove stains better. But because less alcohol makes for a more comfortable daily rinse! You shouldn’t look at it as choosing between an alcohol vs non-alcohol mouthwash. LOW alcohol is the sweet spot.
  • ADA Seal of Acceptance: This means the product was tested for safety AND efficacy, so you can feel a little more confident adding it to your routine.

Whatever you do, steer clear of products that rely on cosmetic dyes or optical brighteners. They sound like they work, but the ingredients rinse off right away and don’t actually move the needle on how your teeth look.

What Else Can a Mouthwash Do?

We know you came here hoping we’d tell you that a whitening mouthwash was your one-way ticket to a stunning smile. It’s not, and any brand telling you otherwise is trying to sell you something it probably can’t deliver on.

That’s not to say mouthwash doesn’t have a place in your oral care regimen, though. It absolutely does. Just not for whitening. A good mouthwash, though, can be a game-changer for your teeth and gums.

LIVFRESH uses a one-of-a-kind ingredient called Activated Edathamil. It’s backed by 40 patents and 40 clinical studies showing it’s worth adding to your routine. The way it works is by dissolving plaque on a molecular level, leaving behind a negative surface charge so new plaque cannot stick.

It has 0.1% alcohol content so you won’t get that awful burn other rinses are notorious for, either. No parabens or triclosan. Safe for braces, implants, veneers, etc. This is the mouthwash you need in your daily ritual - not something that claims to whiten, only to leave you disappointed in the results.

How to Use Your Mouthwash For the Best Whitening Results

Understanding the relationship between mouthwash vs toothpaste is important for making the most of your daily rinse. You should brush first, then use your mouthwash to get whatever your toothbrush bristles missed.

The one exception is if you’re brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. You don’t want to rinse right after using your mouthwash because it could prevent the fluoride from doing its job to the fullest.

Swish for the full 30-60 seconds, and really focus on maximizing coverage. Do this at least once a day, ideally, twice a day, and be consistent in using your mouthwash daily. Consistency is key!

More Ways to Whiten Your Teeth

So, does mouthwash whiten your teeth? Not even enough to make a measurable difference in how your teeth look. There are better ways to correct staining, though.

Our teeth whitening strips use coconut oil to remove years of stains, even those caused by medical treatments. You can get up to 8 shades whiter teeth without any of the discomfort more aggressive whitening strips are notorious for.

Or, try the LIVFRESH mobile whitening system for rapid results. It’s a soothing yet effective solution to whiten all of your teeth - even the most sensitive ones. It’s clinically formulated to prevent discomfort even if you have sensitive teeth.

Take a look at all that LIVFRESH has to offer. From cosmetic enhancements in our whitening products to measurable improvements in plaque and gum health, you can upgrade your entire ritual in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Does mouthwash remove yellow teeth?

Some specialty rinses can reduce surface staining that makes your teeth look yellow, but it’s unlikely that you’ll see a dramatic transformation in how your teeth look just from mouthwash alone.

Are there side effects associated with whitening mouthwashes?

Yes, they can cause tooth sensitivity because they have hydrogen peroxide. Some people also notice gum irritation. Alcohol-based mouthwashes, whether they’re made for whitening or not, can be irritating, too.

Can I use my whitening mouthwash every day?

Yes, and you should if you want to see any sort of improvement in how your teeth look. Even then, though, you’re selling yourself short compared to using a more sophisticated whitening treatment.

Is it true Listerine can whiten teeth?

Listerine does have whitening-specific formulas with hydrogen peroxide, which might be able to lighten surface stains if you use the rinse daily for a long period of time. Just don’t expect any sort of crazy changes, though.

Will tooth whitening products impact my tooth enamel?

It’s pretty low risk at the concentrations found in whitening rinses (just 1.5-2% hydrogen peroxide). You might want to be careful with higher-concentration products containing hydrogen peroxide, though.

Who should not use whitening mouthwashes?

Anyone with severe sensitivity, eroded enamel, exposed roots, or active gum disease. These aren’t recommended for kids under 12, either.
